The Emergency Response Committee of the Korean Medical Association, which opposes the government’s ‘increase in medical school quota by 2,000 students’, held its first meeting at the Yongsan Medical Association Building in Seoul on the followingnoon of the 17th. In the declaration of struggle read before the meeting, the emergency committee said, “Despite any actions or discord by the government, let us unite and unite as one until we achieve the goal we have set, and we will definitely win the struggle.”

The emergency committee also said, “The government unilaterally determined the size of the medical school quota and canceled the 9.4 protocol agreement signed with the Korean Medical Association in 2020,” and added, “The government carried out the pressure of political power without thinking deeply regarding the enormous consequences that expanding the medical school quota would have on the future medical system.” “I committed a foolish act,” he said. He also said, “We must now end the suffering of doctors who have endured the beatings the government has inflicted using unfair medical policies,” and added, “Not only the government, but we, too, must become the entities that create our own medical policies.”

Kim Taek-woo, chairman of the medical association emergency committee, said in his remarks at the meeting that day, “This is an emergency situation comparable to the division of medicine in 2000,” and “the entire medical community must come together.”

At the meeting, regarding 50 emergency committee members, including Chairman Kim, exchanged opinions on the medical student alliance leave of absence, resident resignation, roadmap for future struggles, demands for government action to resolve the medical vacuum situation, and support plans for medical students and residents. The emergency committee also includes Chairman Park Dan of the Korean Medical Residents Association (Daejeon Medical Association), an organization of medical residents, as a member.
