“You haven’t made a reservation? We’ll find you a table inside,” welcomes the owner of the Bretaye 1808 restaurant, on the slopes of Villars-Gryon-Les Diablerets, in a voice that carries him. The influx of 11,000 visitors to the ski area on average per day during the break is not oppressive, the resort having exceeded the 16,000 mark two or three days during the Christmas holidays. Businesses are celebrating a good week in terms of turnover, but “might have done better”.
Théo, manager of the Dätwyler boutique at Col de Bretaye, gives us the schedule for the February holidays. “This week, we welcome the Parisians, the Vaudois, the Fribourgeoises, the Valaisans, some of the Jura residents and the Zurich residents,” he points out. Next week, we will have the Genevans, some of the Zurich residents, some Parisians once more, the Belgians and the Dutch. Some of the skiers from the lowest resorts like Les Mosses or the Friborg resorts go up to ski here due to lack of snow.” While waxing a customer’s snowboard, he points out the empty shelves of rental ski boots. “We are missing some adult sizes, we will bring them up from the village shop, this is a sign of high attendance. But honestly, we expected more people. It’s the commuters who go up for the day who are lacking,” he analyzes.
