The newest patent registered by Apple describes the implementation of a possible new sensor in a device very similar to the Apple Watchwith the ability to measure the perspiration of user. It is worth noting that another of the company’s industrial properties, registered a few years ago, already addressed a related possibility of monitoring hydration.
According to Patently Apple, the patent provides for sets of electrodes pointing outwards (probably towards the user’s skin) that would measure the user’s perspiration. During a measurement session, part of the components would detect sweat signals and measure perspiration from signals between the electrodes, being connected to a measurement circuit.
From this, some type of perspiration metric would be calculated, and there might also be another sensor to carry out this calculation; the components might be positioned in a cavity. The patent also includes electrodes used in the Watch’s electrocardiogram feature, as well as a camera (!) for capturing images in a given field of view.
In addition to just measuring perspiration in one session, the sensor might be activated during exercise, including automatically when starting to exercise. The watch would then, based on the measurements, inform approximately how much the user sweated in total and during a period, as well as other associated metrics, as well as an average sweating rate throughout an exercise, for example.
The data from the sensors might also be used to measure other aspects of the body, such as the presence of substances in sweat, hydration, training intensity, calories burned and the like, in addition to increasing the possibilities of use by developers.
It is worth noting that registering a patent is only a very early part of the development of a feature, so there would still be a long way to go until the sensor is implemented in a commercial model of the Apple Watch, if that actually happens. It is still interesting, however, to see what Apple engineers are thinking regarding for the future.
The industrial property was registered under number 20240050013 in the United States Patent and Trademark Office,
