The Smilist: Optimizing Oral Health with Pure Breath and Daily Rituals

By exchanging the status of “flora” for that of “second brain”, the intestinal microbiota has become one of the stars of medical research. Every day, we discover new effects on health from this large cluster of micro-organisms (bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi) which colonize our intestines. However, other equally important microbiota develop on the skin, lungs, genitals, skull, feet, ears… And in the mouth.

The oral microbiota, with an average of 300 to 400 species that thrive in a very specific environment (temperature, humidity, light) is thus the most varied following that of the intestine. And its proper functioning (eubiosis) or its imbalance (dysbiosis) determines the state of the oral cavity (caries, gingivitis, periodontitis) and this bad breath from which 30% of French people suffer!

A complete morning ritual

Hence the importance of taking care of it. Hygiene is not the only determinant – heredity, age, diet, state of health all come into play – but it is one of the keys. Few care brands, however, make reference to its maintenance, to the need for a daily oral “ritual” as we do for the face and, increasingly, for the hair.

Based on this observation, a dentist and a cosmetic care specialist launched the start-up The Smilist. Their latest innovation, Pure Breath (available from March in drugstores and online), targets the oral ecosystem upon waking, starting with brushing and scraping the tongue inspired by Ayurvedic practice, in order to eliminate bacteria accumulated during the night. Follows a mouthwash enriched with prebiotics (to promote good bacteria), solidago flower (an antibacterial) and mineral zinc to neutralize volatile sulfur compounds. We then brush our teeth and, for comfort during the day, we take the pocket mouth spray with us.
