Faced with the worsening crisis in eastern DRC, Angolan President João Lourenço convened an extraordinary mini-summit this Friday, February 17, 2024 in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia.
According to the spokesperson for the Congolese Head of State, Ms. Tina Salama, this meeting on the sidelines of the 37th AU summit will focus on the security situation in eastern DRC.
“On the sidelines of the 37th Ordinary Session of the AU, President Joao Lourenço, designated mediator, is convening this Friday in Addis Ababa, an Extraordinary Mini-summit on the peace and security situation prevailing in the Eastern region of the DRC,” she said on her X account, formerly called Twitter.
Furthermore, the Angolan Press Agency reports for its part that the objective of this meeting will be to relaunch the peace process following the upcoming deployment of the SADC regional force, approved in August.
“A press release explains that the meeting will focus on the relaunch of the peace process in eastern DRC, following the deployment of the Southern African Development Community (SAMIRDC) mission, approved in August 2023 , in Luanda,” we can read on its website.
Tension is rising between Kinshasa and Kigali following the recent death of South African soldiers in an attack attributed to Rwanda. In recent days, fighting in North Kivu has resumed, forcing tens of thousands of people to flee.
This emergency summit, which is a continuation of the meetings of the Quadripartite Mechanism, is crucial in trying to ease tensions and resolve a conflict that has persisted for more than 20 years in the region.
