This is a discussion post. The post is an expression of the writer’s own position.
On 13 February, Nordjyske published an article regarding Hjørring Municipality’s housing offer Aage Holms Vej, which is based on an anonymous complaint regarding the manager of the site and statements from other anonymous former and current employees.
Problems with the working environment at Hjørring Municipality’s workplaces must be dealt with – no doubt regarding that.
But it is strongly criticizable that Nordjyske chooses to bring an anonymous criticism of a named leader.
It appears from the article that the manager has been asked to comment on the criticism.
It’s just not possible in the real world, because the manager has a duty of confidentiality in relation to both residents and employees on Aage Homs Vej. Of course, Nordjyske also knows this well, so it is a ‘free round’ to ask for a comment – and that only makes it more problematic.
For the same reason, from the municipality’s side, we cannot comment concretely either, but I would like to emphasize that we treat all complaints thoroughly and properly, regardless of whether they are anonymous or not.
I can also completely reject that someone risks being fired because they come forward with a criticism of the conditions or the management at Aage Holms Vej or at other workplaces in Hjørring Municipality. But if for one reason or another you don’t want to go to the management, you can go to both the site’s trade union representatives and occupational health and safety representatives.
If you as an employee therefore experience problems – and want them to be solved – I can only strongly encourage you to report them through the management or your elected representatives. Working environment problems must be solved – but they can only be solved by a concrete effort at the individual workplace, and not in Nordjyske’s columns.
Answer from Editor-in-Chief Mette Rask Bentzen, North Jutland:
It is completely understandable that Hjørring Kommuner reacts strongly to the criticism that appears in the article – these are serious things that the employees report regarding.
Optimally, the working environment would be dealt with internally. When the employees have chosen to go to Nordjyske, it is because they feel that the problem has not been taken care of.
It is always possible to respond to a criticism – also without breaking the obligation of confidentiality, and we would really like to have included the management’s comment in the article.
