The subject is of course very topical and Mimi Denisi knows that such a documentary will arouse international interest and mobilize consciousness at a global level for the return of the Sculptors to our homeland.
Thus, following “Smirni my beloved”, a very successful film and performance that is currently being presented at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, Mimi Denisi is preparing a documentary, the central character of which will be Lady Elgin. The script of the documentary which has the eloquent title “The woman behind Elgin” is signed by Mimi Denisi herself, directed by Katerina Evangelakou and produced by the LUMAD company of Elena Hatziaalexandrou.
“I started the research for the documentary during the time of the coronavirus, when I was forced to sit”, says Mimi Denisis to “ET”, who reveals that the material she has in her hands is terrible! “The documentary is based on the book published by Lady Elgin’s grandson (the one he’s holding in the photo), which was published in 1900.”
Included in this are the letters of an English aristocrat and his wife, where they refer to the Caryatids with immeasurable insolence and complete lack of respect as… “Cary something”!
The documentary will be dramatized with Mimi herself doing the narration, as well as another surprise role, as she tells us. “The main roles will be Lord Elgin, Lady Elgin of course and Byron.”
It also reveals that international personalities from Greece and abroad speak in the documentary and express their opinion on the return of the Sculptors to the country where they belong, Greece. Among them, as he reveals to “E.T.” Mimi Denisi, and Eleni Glykatzi-Arveler, who has already filmed her part. “He is talking regarding our poet Cavafy, who had also asked for the return of the Parthenon Marbles.”
Furthermore, in the documentary, Greek, English and Turkish historians explain and analyze the historical events.
Mimi Denisi believes that the documentary will raise awareness among the global community, “as the image conveys the message in the most appropriate way. Something that also happened with Smyrna.”
Filming will begin next May and will take place in Greece, Turkey, Great Britain and Scotland.
The Chronicles of theft
The documentary reveals the story of the theft of the Parthenon Sculptures from another perspective, as captured in the private correspondence of Lord Elgin and his wife. For the first time, light will be shed on a nation’s biggest cultural heritage grab through personal conversations and authentic documents. The documentary will highlight the real motivations behind the barbaric removal of the sculptures belonging to Greece, bringing to the surface facts and truths that until now have been well hidden in the personal documents of the Elgin family.
