Vienna (OTS) – On the death of Putin critic Alexej Navalny, the ORF is changing its program today, February 16, 2024: ORF 2 has a 15-minute “ZIB Special” on the program at 8:15 p.m., the “ZIB 2 (new start time 10:15 p.m.) will be extended by a quarter of an hour, followed by the 2023 Oscar-winning documentary “Nawalny” at 11 p.m. ORF III will discuss “Putin, Navalny and Ukraine” in “Zur SACHE” at 8:15 p.m.

The programs “The Prosecutor” and “WeltWeit” each start 15 minutes late (at 8:30 p.m. and 9:35 p.m. respectively), “3 Am Round Table” and “Universum History: The Scent of Coffee – Enjoyment and Rebellion” are canceled today and become one made up at a later date.

“ZIB Special: Navalny is dead” (8:15 p.m., ORF 2)

Russia’s most famous opposition figure has been found dead in a prison camp in Siberia. The prison authorities remain silent regarding the cause of Alexei Navalny’s death. What is behind the death of the Kremlin critic and what does it mean for the presidential election campaign? A “ZIB Special” with Nadja Bernhard tries to provide answers. The guest in the studio is the long-time ORF office manager in Moscow Paul Krisai.

The “ZIB Special: Navalny is dead” is broadcast barrier-free. For deaf and hearing-impaired viewers, live subtitles are available on ORF TELETEXT on page 777 and in the ORF TVthek. In addition, the transmission is offered in Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS) and translated live by the ÖGS interpreter Sabine Zeller – on ORF 2 Europe (via satellite and cable), ORF 2 W (in SD via simpliTV antenna, can be received throughout Austria) and in the ORF-TVthek via live stream and video-on-demand. The barrier-free programs are available seven days as video-on-demand on on.ORF.at and in the ORF TVthek app.

“Nawalny” (11 p.m., ORF 2; now also available on ORF ON or in the TVthek app)

The documentary “Nawalny” by Canadian director Daniel Roher shockingly documents the poison attack and attempted murder of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny on August 20, 2020. Like a crime thriller, the film follows the search for the perpetrators, combining interviews, Archive material, Russian propaganda and activities on social media, and Alexei Navalny gave the director generous insights into his political but also private existence. At the 2023 Oscars, “Nawalny” was awarded best documentary film.

ORF III is also changing its program today and will have Reiner Reitsamer appear in “Zur SACHE” at 8:15 p.m. on the topic of “Putin, Navalny and Ukraine” with Velina Tchakarova (security expert), Gerhard Mangott (Professor of International Relations, University of Innsbruck), Reinhard Heinisch (Political scientist, University of Salzburg), Alisa Khokhulya (teacher, fled Ukraine in 2022) and Simone Brunner (journalist “Die Zeit”) will discuss.
