Ukrainian troops have withdrawn from the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka to prevent encirclement, Ukrainian army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said in a Facebook post on Saturday. The withdrawal follows months of heavy Russian attacks and represents the biggest change on the frontline since Moscow’s troops captured Bakhmut in May 2023. Syrskyi wants to use the measure to “stabilize” the situation at the front.
The soldiers “withdrew from Avdiivka to previously prepared positions in accordance with an order,” wrote General Oleksandr Tarnavskij, who is responsible for the front section, in the Telegram online service on Saturday night.
