STANLEY, N.D. (KMOT) – According to crop specialists, soybeans have become the number one crop grown in North Dakota and part of what affects yield is managing its diseases.
Wade Webster, a soybean pathologist with NDSU said no matter the weather conditions or soil moisture, different types of diseases can proliferate.
Webster said most common types are soil borne and those can be managed with seed treatments early season.
However, he said diseases like white mold take hold further along the growing season and there’s a short window of time to apply pesticides over it.
“Typically, between the early-middle July, all the way through the beginning of August, but once we get outside of that flowering period, it’s when flowers are no longer present on the soybeans, then we can’t protect it anymore,” said Webster.
He said another way to keep disease at bay is by picking seed varieties that are genetically resistant.
