How to act when there is an earthquake?

Knowing how to act in the event of an earthquake is essential to prevent accidents and increase the chances of survival. These are some detailed indications, both by the CDC and by the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD):

What not to do

It is also important to keep in mind those actions or behaviors that might be dangerous, as they increase the risk of suffering accidents that might easily have been prevented.

  • Do not leave the house or run to other rooms during an earthquake. The chance of injury is less if the person stays in one place.
  • Do not run desperately out of buildings or houses during the earthquake, as windows, poles, lights, among other objects might fall.
  • Do not get under door frames. Other people might have the same idea.
  • Do not use the elevators. It is possible that during an earthquake the power goes out and they stop.
