Truckers call on Congress to suspend vacations “to take the reins of the country” – La Discusión 2024-02-16 08:11:28

The Truckers’ Association of the O’Higgins Region (Asgro) called on Congress this Wednesday to suspend its February legislative recess, following the assault that ended with two farmers murdered on the Fruit Route, O’Higgins Region.

“We call on the senators and deputies who are on vacation today, resting at home, while Chileans are suffering from the insecurity that is being experienced in the country, to please go back to work, legislate once more and do what is necessary to take the reins of this country,” said Camilo Jiménez, spokesperson for the organization.

Yesterday, the Undersecretary of the Interior met with the Asgro board at the La Moneda Palace following the 72-hour ultimatum made by its leaders following the double crime that occurred on Saturday.

The meeting had as a basis for discussion border control, Armed Forces in the streets and the expulsion of foreigners who commit crimes and, at the end of the meeting, the truck drivers ruled out resorting to a national strike, for the moment, until they have a Government response.

“Unfortunately, Undersecretary Monsalve is not taking the weight of the situation he is experiencing in the country. He mentions that he has every intention of taking the military to the streets to collaborate on the security issue, but he enlists the responsibility of the Senate,” Jiménez explained today.

The Asgro spokesperson pointed out that “we have a meeting at around 8:00 p.m. and we are going to decide (whether there will be a stoppage or not). If we do not see concrete solutions, we call on the community to support mobilizations to put an end to crime.”

The Government has stressed that they are not closed to alternative solutions in terms of security and there is no prejudice in this, but “it is important that the solutions offered have a history, have support to be able to effectively solve the problem that is intended to be attacked.” President Gabriel Boric commented yesterday.
