The US charges for the fifth time ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, still on the run

New York, Feb 15 (EFE).- A New York prosecutor charged this Thursday for the fifth time Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, founder and leader of the Sinaloa Cartel who is missing, for the crimes of manufacturing and distribution of fentanyl in the United States.

Prosecutor Breon S. Peace of the Eastern District of New York issued this fifth indictment this followingnoon before a federal court in Brooklyn, which is added to the previous ones issued for crimes such as directing a criminal organization, murder, money laundering and various crimes related to drug trafficking.

According to the prosecutor, Zambada “continues to lead the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world,” and recalls that the crimes attributed to Zambada extend over ten years, from 2014 to 2024.

The charging order describes fentanyl as “the most lethal drug the United States has ever known” and the Sinaloa Cartel as “the largest trafficker of fentanyl” to this country.

Despite the fact that the United States has frozen his bank accounts and other businesses, and despite the fact that he has managed to get Mexico to arrest his son Vicente – and then extradite him to the US in 2010 -, ‘El Mayo’ Zambada has never set foot in a jail.

In addition, the prosecution has increased the reward from $5 million to $15 million for anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest of Zambada, information that can be sent to the Department of Justice by telephone, email and even through social networks.

Of the founders of the Sinaloa Cartel, the famous Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán was arrested in Mexico, extradited and sentenced to life imprisonment plus thirty years, and the son of ‘El Chapo’, Ovido Guzmán, is also detained in a prison of Colorado.
