One step away from PSG’s failure. Kylian Mbappe saved them. That’s when it started!
Now in the 1/8 finals, PSG faced Spanish Real Sociedad. This is not the most difficult possible rival, but in the first half there was no great advantage of the hosts. The French had a big problem with creating specific situations. In the 25th minute, Ousmane Dembele might have scored a goal, but his shot went just wide of the post. However, the guests were closest to the goal in this part of the match – Mikel Merino’s long-distance shot was stopped by the crossbar.
Moments later, the referee finished the first half. The camera showed a clearly irritated Kylian Mbappe. This is not surprising, because PSG as a whole performed clearly below expectations – and yet for the star of the French national team, this is probably the last season in the Parisian team. Failure at this stage would be a huge failure.
Just a dozen or so minutes later, PSG might enjoy taking the lead. And it was Mbappe who struck the first blow. After a corner kick in the 58th minute and a header passed by Marquinhos, the ball went straight to the feet of the French representative, who broke away from the defender and gave the goalkeeper no chance.
In the 71st minute it was already 2-0. Bradley Barcola received the ball on the wing and then passed the Real Sociedad defender without any problems. His defensive partner was unable to reach Barcola, who beat the goalkeeper with a flat shot. Moments following the goal, the French youth representative left the field.
Ultimately, PSG won without any major problems – no one will remember the poor first half for a long time – and a disaster would have to happen for the French club not to advance to the quarterfinals. The rematch will take place on March 5.
