Quincy Promes was found guilty on Wednesday of involvement in cocaine smuggling and was sentenced to six years in prison. This also applies to his cousin Marylio V., who also received six years. The Amsterdam court ruled that Promes was guided by financial gain.

The court particularly blames Promes because he is an example to many. He flaunts his wealth and tries to increase his prestige by engaging in international drug trafficking, according to the court.

The 32-year-old Promes himself was once more absent from the courtroom. His lawyers Robert Malewicz and Sophie Hof previously made it clear that Promes is not attending the hearings because of his obligations as a football player for Spartak Moscow.

A prison sentence would jeopardize his career. Promes was informed of the ruling in Russia and immediately announced that he would appeal. He has always denied, but never explained the suspicion once morest him in an interrogation.

The judge sees sufficient evidence that Promes played an important role in obtaining two shipments of cocaine. At the beginning of 2020, almost 1,400 kilos of cocaine entered the port of Antwerp. Belgian customs seized part of it.

According to the court, Promes hid behind the name ‘Fantasma’. That name was used for an account on the encrypted messaging service Sky ECC. The court saw important evidence for this in Promes’ travel movements. The telephone might be linked to six flights of which the footballer was also on board.

Promes received help from his cousin

In the messages from ‘Fantasma’, the former player of FC Twente and Ajax, among others, would talk regarding payments. It can also be read that “his boys are on their way to Antwerp”, referring to so-called extractors who remove the cocaine from containers. It has become clear that Promes “had a guiding and facilitating role”, the court says.

Promes was helped by his cousin Marylio V. According to the court, V. had a supporting role in the import of the drugs. He has previously been sentenced to four years in prison for cocaine smuggling.

V. made a partially confessional statement. He said he had only put two people in contact with the organization behind the drug importation. He did the boys “a favor by letting them earn some pocket money” as a striker.

For Promes it is the second conviction in a short time. In June last year he was jailed for a year and a half for serious assault. The judge saw enough evidence that he had stabbed another cousin in the knee with a knife following a family party. An appeal is also pending in that case.
