2024-02-15 11:36:13

There are people who seem to fall out of reality from time to time.

A minute ago they were actively participating in the conversation, but now they suddenly fell silent. The look became absent, and the movements became strange. This behavior may be a sign of obsessive daydreaming syndrome. We talk regarding him in the 84th issue of the guide to the psyche.

What is called obsessive daydreaming syndrome?

With obsessive dream syndrome, the fantasies that captivate a person are so intense and detailed that they completely absorb him and he disconnects from reality. As a result, he may temporarily forget what he is doing at that moment, or begin to behave as he does in his fantasies.

Other signs of obsessive daydreaming syndrome:

  • fantasies are stories with complex plot lines and well-developed characters. They can last from a few minutes to several hours;
  • Triggers include both real events and sensory stimuli: noises, smells, sounds. And also – vivid impressions, for example, a film you recently watched;
  • a person develops a detached expression on his face, he may begin to make repetitive movements, suddenly utter unrelated phrases or whisper regarding something;
  • the person has trouble concentrating or completing daily tasks;
  • signs of insomnia appear, such as difficulty falling asleep.

Obsessive daydreams can also sometimes be enjoyable. But more often during them, a person imagines scenes of violence, sex, reprisals once morest his offenders or salvation from them.

Causes of obsessive daydreaming syndrome

Neither the exact causes of the development of obsessive daydreaming syndrome nor the prevalence of this condition are known. But there are several factors that can increase a person’s tendency to this condition.

Fantasies help to temporarily escape from reality, get positive emotions – and thus give the psyche and the whole body the opportunity to take a little break.

Why is obsessive daydreaming syndrome dangerous?

Because obsessive dreams can be somewhat addictive, a person may begin to neglect their responsibilities in the real world: miss deadlines, not do necessary housework, and reduce communication with loved ones. As a result, he may feel guilty towards others, which can cause chronic stress.

How to get rid of obsessive dreams

There are currently no treatment protocols for intrusive daydreaming syndrome. Typically, those who want to get rid of this condition are recommended first of all to reduce the level of everyday stress: maintain a sleep schedule, be physically active, spend more time in the fresh air, master one or more relaxation practices and do not neglect communication with loved ones and friends. All this should help such people stabilize their psychological state – as a result, the need for frequent fantasizing may disappear.

If obsessive daydreaming syndrome begins to negatively affect a person’s life and relationships, he should consult a psychotherapist.

It will help a person understand the reasons that force him to resort to obsessive dreams, teach him ways to control this condition and other methods of reducing stress.

If it turns out that obsessive daydreaming syndrome is one of the symptoms of a mental disorder, treatment will be aimed primarily at it.
