“Tomb Raider” is undeniably one of the video games that have left their mark on the young video game industry. Released in 1996, Lara Croft’s very first adventure, first appeared on PC then on consoles of the time. Fully in 3D, with impressive graphics, but completely outdated today, the game created by the defunct British studio Core Design notably contributed to popularizing the 3dfx accelerator card which made graphics smoother and more detailed on computers.

“Tomb Raider” I, II and III, the original and its two sequels, therefore, also left their mark on the first PlayStation, contributing to its success. Lara Croft even had the honor of appearing on the front page of the daily newspaper “Libération”, a sign that people were beginning to view video games as a leisure activity capable of generating added artistic value worthy of interest. For the media mainstreamit was almost a first.

The first three episodes of the adventurer are now back in a “remastered” version released last Thursday for download only on Windows, PlayStation, Switch and Xbox. We played there.

The proposed overhaul only concerns the graphics and general fluidity of the games. The gameplay remained identical to two or three details. Lara Croft is now displayed in high definition, with a fluidity that was unimaginable at the time (especially on consoles). The beauty has gained curves, her breasts are no longer pointy triangles. But just press a button to return to what the original graphics were like and see how far we’ve come.

The absence of a gameplay overhaul (and also the maintenance of certain sexist or racial prejudices, which earned us a warning message when launching the game) leaves little doubt, however, regarding the objective of the overhaul: to exploit the maximum the nostalgia of old gamers, at least those who already tried it in the 90s.

For our part, we wouldn’t have spat on a slightly more in-depth overhaul, particularly for the handling of the damsel and in particular the management of the sometimes awkward and embarrassing virtual camera. The price of the overhaul nevertheless makes up for a lot of things, around thirty francs for the three episodes.
