According to the experts of the Austrian Severe Weather Center February is clearly on track for records – there is no onset of winter in sight.
In total, according to experts, the first half of February in Austria was almost 7 degrees warmer than the long-term average from 1991 to 2020 and therefore record warm.
“On the one hand, the general weather situation is responsible for the high temperature deviations, but on the other hand, global warming also plays a significant role, as the water temperatures in the North Atlantic continue to be record-warm for the time of year,” says Nikolas Zimmermann, meteorologist at the Austrian Severe Weather Center. “Therefore, the air masses that reach us from the west are a little milder than they already are.”
February will be the warmest in recorded history
The deviations from the mean in Austria are currently between +4 degrees in the Lavanttal and +9 degrees in the southern Vienna Basin. Even if the second half of the month turns out to be average, February 2024 will be the warmest in the history of measurements in Austria.
The Alpine region lies on the edge of a North Sea depression Freitag still under the influence of very mild air masses for the time of year, the zero degree limit rises to a good 3000 m altitude. In regions such as the Waldviertel and Mostviertel, fog persists, but outside of that the sun often shines with only harmless veiled clouds. Depending on the fog and sun, the maximum values are between 8 degrees in the Waldviertel and 17 degrees in the Northern Alps.
Slight cooling off on the weekend
The Saturday It will be mostly cloudy and there will be some rain at times on the north side of the Alps. Some easing of weather can most likely be expected in the extreme south. The temperatures drop slightly on the north side of the Alps and the maximum values are between 8 and 14 degrees from north to south.
Am Sunday Clouds will initially predominate and a few raindrops will fall in places in the south. During the day, the clouds in the west and in the Danube region slowly clear up and the sun comes out at times. The maximum values are between 8 and 15 degrees.
