Venezuelan Activist Raid: Update on Rocío San Miguel’s Arrest and House Raid

(CNN in Spanish) – – Venezuelan security forces raided the house of activist Rocío San Miguel in Caracas on Wednesday night, according to CNN and reported by the legal team of the director of the non-governmental organization Citizen Control.

At least six officials from various government institutions entered the place, such as the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (Sebin) and the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence (DGCIM), CNN observed.

While the raid was being carried out, Miranda Díaz San Miguel, daughter of the activist, and one of her lawyers were outside the property.

Later, lawyer Joel García reported that, following the operation, the authorities took from the house printed maps of security zones that San Miguel used when he was a teacher at military institutes, as well as his daughter’s iPad device. The home was not confiscated.

CNN contacted the Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office to request more details regarding these actions. The press area responded that it had no information.

The raid on the activist’s house occurs as this Friday marks one week since she was arrested accused of crimes such as conspiracy, terrorism and association. The Prosecutor’s Office points her out as a co-participant in a conspiracy once morest President Nicolás Maduro, something that her defense rejects.

In addition to San Miguel, Alejandro González, his ex-partner, is also detained, accused of revealing political and military secrets, obstruction of the administration of justice and association. On Tuesday, the Prosecutor’s Office announced that a court issued preventive judicial deprivation of liberty to both of them as a precautionary measure.

This Wednesday, Attorney General Tarek William Saab defended San Miguel’s arrest, which has been criticized by the United Nations, the European Union and the governments of the United States and Canada.
