From the Estación Central commune, the Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, provided details regarding the measures announced by President Gabriel Boric this Thursday within the framework of the reinforcement of the Streets without Violence Plan.

The authority pointed out that these actions indicate that there are “deficiencies in security that we have to respond to.”

First of all, the Executive announced joint work between Carabineros, PDI, the delegate of the Metropolitan Region, Constanza Martínez, the Public Ministry and the prosecutor in charge of the ECOH teams, Héctor Barros. Monsalve explained that there will be 68 officials who will accompany Prosecutor Barros’ role in police investigations, and that equipment and technology will be reinforced so that investigations are more effective.

The second measure corresponds to the presence of 550 police officers who will patrol 50 checkpoints in the Metropolitan Region. During the morning they will be in places that have more influx of public, while in the followingnoon they will be in the critical points where violent crimes occur, said the undersecretary. It is expected that by March 1 there will be 100 mobile checkpoints in the RM.

The third announcement is linked to the control of weapons in the Metropolitan Region, including those registered. In addition, “a program will be implemented to investigate complaints regarding the illegal use of firearms.”

Monsalve also highlighted that President Boric will convene the National Security Council (Cosena) for the first time in more than four years. The presidents of the Chamber of Deputies, the Senate and the Supreme Court must attend the instance, in addition to the comptroller(s), the three commanders of the Armed Forces and the general director of the Carabineros. The president also has the power to invite the ministers of the Interior and Defense.

The Government hopes that the critical infrastructure project, which requires complementing the work of the police, will be processed quickly.

The last measure is the creation of a security cabinet with which the Government will seek to reinforce work on security.
