Fixing Left-Right Audio Balance Bug in macOS: Solutions and Updates

2024-02-15 02:00:00

Apple has yet to fix the flaw in macOS that causes audio balance on Macs to go skewed under certain conditions, despite acknowledging the issue nearly 12 years ago, according to macrumors.

A developer named Fabian highlighted the issue in a post on X (formerly Twitter), claiming that Apple “has yet to fix the left-right audio balance bug in macOS, and I’ve yet to use an app to automatically fix it, dating back to “The year is 2015, which means we are approaching our tenth anniversary.”

Balance Lock is the app in question, which can be downloaded for free from Tunabelly, and the bug’s persistence has been confirmed by other users who responded to and commented on X’s post in Hacker News.

Users in 2013 on Stack Exchange reported that they encountered the same error on multiple Macs dating back to 2003, and whether or not this is the case, what we do know is that Apple acknowledged the error on February 12, 2012 in a Mac OS Which is no longer on Apple’s website but can be retrieved via the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine.

Apple says in it: In some cases, the sound balance may unexpectedly drift toward the left or right channel, and this can happen if you quickly press the volume up or down keys while the computer’s microprocessor is under heavy load, and to correct the problem, Apple advises users Open the Sound panel in System Preferences (now System Settings) and drag the Sound Balance slider to the desired position.

Given Apple’s advice at the time, it appears that the company wasn’t able to come up with a proper solution when the support document was published, which begs the question as to whether it still doesn’t have a fix for the flaw, which is why the company has allowed it to remain in releases. successive operating systems from Mac OS
