13 cases of dengue fever in 5 months in Polynesia. “ Of all the confirmed cases, only the DEN-2 serotype was identified, underlined the latest health monitoring bulletin. The sequencing of the viruses carried out by the Louis Malardé Institute indicates a strong similarity with a genotype initially identified in Mexico for the case of November 2023 and for the case of S01 2024. This sequence is different from the sequences circulating in the Antilles or in Asia/ Pacific frequently identified in cases imported into French Polynesia« .

The last dengue epidemic in fenua dates from 2020. Between February 2019 and January 2020, 2,497 indigenous cases and 2 imported cases of dengue 2 were confirmed. This time, the Country is not yet talking regarding an epidemic, but remains “on alert”.

This Tuesday, a meeting took place in which the Minister of Health Cédric Mercadal participated: “The number of cases has nevertheless increased rapidly week following week, including on Moorea. We must monitor this carefully (…) The youngest are not immune so we must be vigilant and implement the action plan, he explains. Today is a meeting of all operators to jointly organize vigilance across the entire territory”

After bad weather, prevention is essential: mosquito breeding grounds are more likely to develop. “We must not forget that today, eliminating mosquito breeding grounds is a priority to avoid rapid contamination since we will have a proliferation of larvae.”

What to do when you are sick? “Go see your doctor. Take a “ser”o test to find out if you have dengue fever or not because it looks like the flu. And this will make it possible to avoid problems (…) The congestion of emergencies, dispensaries and all health posts, including liberal ones who are also facing the crisis.”

The Liberals were precisely “put on standby” explains the minister, as part of this system “to take the necessary means of prevention so as not to immobilize our healthcare offering”.

The new cases are indeed indigenous, specifies Cédric Mercadal. “On the imported cases we sprayed because we did not want transmission. Now that it is on the territory and that it is transmitted from person to person, we see that there are cases in Moorea, in Mahina, almost everywhere. We have to be careful and follow it day by day. These are indigenous cases, cases from here who did not import the virus because they did not go on vacation. So the virus is on the territory. »
