Galaxy A launched in Korea… “2 in the first half of last year → 4 in the first half of this year”

On the 10th, IT tipster Evan Blass posted leaked images of three smartphones on his Twitter, saying, “This is the (Galaxy) A.” / Photo = Evan Blass Twitter Samsung Electronics will introduce low-end smartphones one following another in the first half of this year. This is an effort to respond to the government’s plan to ‘reduce the burden of communication costs.’ With a total of four models expected to be released in the first half of the year, it is expected that more choices from the ‘Galaxy A’ series will be provided than ever before.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced this year’s major policies on the 13th and announced that it would encourage the release of mid- to low-priced terminals in the 400,000 to 800,000 won range within the first half of the year. The idea is to increase the number of mid- to low-priced phones, considering that a significant portion of the burden of household communication costs is the price of high-priced handsets, mainly premium models, costing well over 1 million won.

Previously, Samsung Electronics launched the Galaxy A25, an entry-level terminal, in the domestic market on the 5th of last month. With a factory price of 449,900 won, it is equipped with three rear cameras (main, ultra-wide-angle, and macro), optical image stabilization (OIS) and video image stabilization (VDIS) functions, and the Exynos 1280 AP (application processor).

The A35 and A15 series are considered to be the next mid-priced phone models to be released by Samsung. Both models obtained radio wave certification from the National Radio Research Agency this year. Considering that products that have completed radio wave certification are usually released to the market within 2 to 3 months, it is assessed that a domestic launch is imminent. Considering the price of its predecessor, the A35 is expected to be the lowest priced model at around 500,000 won, and the A15, which was launched first in the Vietnamese market, is expected to be around 300,000 won.

The remaining one is likely to be A55. It is the highest-spec product among the Galaxy A series. A55 is expected to be equipped with Exynos 1480. The previous model, the A54 5G model, was launched by SK Telecom last year under the model name ‘Quantum 4’. The previous A54 5G model was released last year by SK Telecom under the model name ‘Quantum 4’, and if the price range at the time is maintained, the factory price is expected to be around 600,000 won.

Considering that Samsung Electronics only introduced two mid- to low-priced devices, the Galaxy A24 and A34, in the first half of last year, this year’s expansion of its mid- to low-priced lineup is unusual. In the telecommunications industry, Samsung Electronics, which was reorganizing its smartphone lineup in consideration of the domestic market where ‘premium phones’ such as Galaxy S and Z are popular, has revised its strategy in response to the government’s order to ease the burden of communication costs.

However, mid- to low-priced lineups are not very welcome in the telecommunications industry. For manufacturers, it is advantageous to focus on premium phones with high margins, but they need to diversify their marketing capabilities by launching mid- to low-priced phones, and for telecommunication companies, customers with mid- to low-priced phones tend to choose relatively low rate plans, so they have to focus on ARPU (average monthly usage amount). This is not a customer worth welcoming.

An official in the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) industry explained, “The decline in the number of so-called ‘telecom-oriented’ smartphones that were released without exception in the past is also due to the conflicting interests of manufacturers and telecommunication companies who are not happy with mid-priced phones.”

In the past three years, SK Telecom has released the Galaxy A series under the model name ‘SKT’ with product names such as Wide and Quantum, and KT has released the A series and the lower-end M series under the model name ‘Jump’. On the other hand, LG U+ released the ‘Buddy 1 and 2’ models in 2021 and 2022, but skipped last year.
