A 28-year-old man had a remarkable hobby of cloning cars that ended up costing him a prison sentence.
Cloning a car involves removing the chassis number and giving it a new one. Car cloning is typically used if the perpetrator wants to hide a stolen car.
The man was accused of having cloned and resold a total of nine cars that were in illegal condition.
According to the indictment, the cars were stolen and of the brands Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Range Rover.
The cars were stolen back in 2019 and then sold on to various leasing companies.
A total of three leasing companies bought the stolen cars, without knowing that they were actually stolen, including a leasing company in Viborg.
According to the indictment, the 28-year-old man was in cahoots with another 28-year-old man.
Left court before sentencing
On Tuesday, the court in Aalborg ruled on the five-year-old case.
Both 28-year-old men pleaded not guilty and made statements neither to the police nor in court.
Here, the 28-year-old man who was accused of cloning the nine cars was sentenced to a prison sentence of one year, of which three months were suspended.
He was convicted in five cases out of the nine.
The other 28-year-old was only charged in a single case of cloning a car, but he was acquitted because the court did not find it proven that the vehicle was cloned.
The man who was sentenced to one year in prison was also ordered to pay compensation to the leasing company from Viborg of approximately DKK 270,000.
The other two leasing companies’ compensation claims will be settled in a civil action.
It remains unknown whether the convicted 28-year-old appeals or accepts the sentence, as he left the Court in Aalborg before the sentencing.
