  • Tim Hanssen from the Netherlands received a fine of 380 euros.

  • The man was photographed in traffic in November, allegedly talking on the phone.

  • The Dutchman defends himself.

A man was turned into a traffic offender by an AI system. Tim Hanssen from Echt in the Dutch province of Limburg recently received a fine of 380 euros. The reason: Hanssen was photographed by an AI camera on the highway as he scratched his head with his right hand. However, the system interpreted the image differently: Hanssen was said to have been talking on his cell phone while behind the wheel.

As the HLN portal reports, the Dutch transport authority has an AI system that detects the use of cell phones while driving. Tim Hanssen now had to learn the bitter way that the software is not entirely reliable.

The system thought Hanssen was on the phone

The Dutchman shakes his head because he himself works in the field of artificial intelligence. “When learning, the algorithm probably saw how many people were making phone calls with their smartphones in their hands. From that he concluded that I was also on the phone,” he says.

In his case, however, there is a double error, as HLN further reports. The employee who was supposed to check the violations captured by the camera also didn’t realize that Hanssen wasn’t holding a phone in his hand. Now the Dutchman wants to challenge the fines.
