Prime Video removes Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision from plan with ads

O Amazon Prime Video no longer offers Dolby Atmos or Dolby Vision as a benefit for regular Prime subscribers. This is part of the change in service plans in the US, which now has the option of being with or without ads, where you have to pay an extra amount on Amazon Prime to not see advertisements on the Prime Video streaming service.

Without Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision: what does this change for you

Amazon spokesperson Katie Barker told TheVerge that “Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos features are only available in the ad-free option, in relevant titles.” This means you will have to pay extra to access Dolby Laboratories’ surround sound and HDR video technology, with the exception of Dolby Digital 5.1, available on the ad-supported plan alongside HDR10.

Now, if Amazon Prime subscribers want to watch content with the maximum available audio and video quality, they will need to pay 18% more in the USA to purchase an ad-free Amazon Prime Video subscription. However, it is not yet known whether the same will happen here in Brazil.

What is Dolby Atmos?

Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology developed by Dolby Laboratories. It makes multichannel speaker systems have height channels, meaning that the sounds produced are interpreted as three-dimensional objects.

The first appearance of Dolby Atmos was in cinemas, but its popularization led to the technology being adapted for home use. Thus, several products were launched under the Atmos brand, for example, speakers to be built into the ceiling and vertically (to reflect the sound on the walls).

What is Dolby Vision?

Dolby Vision is a set of technologies developed for transmitting HDR (high dynamic range) videos. It includes dynamic metadata that defines the aspect ratio and adjusts the image according to the capabilities of the TV screen, optimizing the presentation. The format has a maximum resolution of 8K, color depth of up to 12 bits and maximum brightness of 10,000 nits.
