Not playable! After the rain chaos in Saarbrücken on February 7, 2024, the cup game once morest Borussia Mönchengladbach had to be canceled.

Now we’re getting one following the other!

Even a week following the cup chaos, Saarbrücken can’t calm down! On Wednesday (February 7, 2024), Borussia Mönchengladbach’s guest game at 1. FC Saarbrücken had to be canceled due to the unplayable pitch in the Ludwigsparkstadion.

Gladbach cup game moved to another stadium? decision made

Both teams now have to wait until March 12th to grab the last free place for the DFB Cup semi-finals. It wasn’t the first time that the Saarbrücken team had problems with their pitch – home games were always in jeopardy or had to be canceled due to heavy rain.

Because the city owns the stadium, the matter quickly became quite a political issue. Now the most important decision to date has been made – not under pressure from the city, but from the DFB.

As it became known late on Tuesday followingnoon (February 13th), the turf in the Ludwigsparkstadion will be replaced soon. For Bundesliga clubs, regularly replacing the running surface is not a big issue. However, this is an enormous financial outlay, especially for teams in the 3rd league and the regional league.

But the people of Saarbrücken are now taking it upon themselves – the “Saarbrücker Zeitung” reports costs in the region of around 200,000 euros. This is intended to avert ongoing gaming operations and a worst-case scenario from the Saarlanders’ perspective.

Because as the “Saarländischer Rundfunk” reports, the DFB made an announcement following the second game cancellation of a Saarbrücken home game this season.

“If we don’t start the work, 1. FC Saarbrücken would lose its home stadium for the next eight home games and it would not be possible to host the DFB Cup quarter-finals once morest Borussia Mönchengladbach. We want to prevent that,” said Mayor Uwe Conradt (47).

That means: Saarbrücken would not only have lost the home advantage for the upcoming third division games, but also for the highlight of the season so far in the third-to-last cup round. The Saarlanders are hoping for the next big coup and wanted to prevent a move to an alternative stadium at all costs.

By setting a deadline, the DFB took action – and that now ensures the turf is swapped. But Borussia will benefit from this: The Foals will be the third club – following two home games in the league – to be able to finish on the new place.

This should represent a clear advantage for the stronger Fohlenelf compared to the original conditions that would have prevailed in Saarbrücken without the cancellation last Wednesday.

In addition, the decision means that the Gladbachers now have planning security: If no unforeseeable problem arises when replacing the turf, the catch-up game will also take place in the Ludwigsparkstadion.
