Two women imprisoned in Peru, one Peruvian and one Venezuelan, died from burns resulting from a fire they caused in a prison cell in Lima, the National Penitentiary Institute (Inpe) reported on Tuesday.
“Inpe regrets the death of the inmates of the Chorrillos Annex prison: María del Pilar Moreno and Michael Arraéz Uzcátegui” (of Venezuelan nationality), the institution said in a statement.
The inmates were in the meditation (discipline) cell, where they were taken as part of a disciplinary process.
According to the Peruvian authorities, the inmates “caused a fire by lighting a mattress, which is why the security protocols were activated and they were transferred to a hospital,” south of Lima.
The Inpe dismissed the director of the prison to avoid obstruction in the investigations carried out by the police and the Public Ministry.
