Esri Launches Landsat Satellite Data App for Visualizing and Analyzing Earth Changes

2024-02-13 21:19:35

A Esri, the global leader in mapping and location intelligence software, announces the launch of Landsat Explorer, an innovative online application that makes it easier than ever for organizations to access and analyze multispectral imagery from Landsat satellite missions. Remote sensing imagery and earth observation play a key role in helping organizations at local, regional and national government levels make informed decisions regarding natural resources, humanized or modified landscapes and the environment. Esri’s new ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World app brings unprecedented ease of use and accessibility to Esri’s multispectral imagery. Landsat Level-2, empowering organizations to make informed decisions regarding natural resources and the environment. With an in-depth time stamp, multispectral images from Landsat satellite missions are compatible with numerous Earth monitoring applications.

“Landsat’s collection of multispectral imagery is an essential tool for organizations that must track and document land use and changes associated with climate change, urbanization, drought, fire, deforestation, and other natural and human processes,” said Sean Breyer, Esri program manager for ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World. “This collection of images is a record dating back more than 40 years, constituting one of the most valuable sources for understanding terrestrial change from a temporal point of view. GIS not only makes data, like Landsat, easy to access and share, but it also allows users to obtain and disseminate valuable information from it.”

The new application enables the location and exploration of the Landsat image collection, which is highly easy to use and will be especially valuable for organizations working in remote sensing and earth observation imagery. Jointly managed by the USGS and NASA, Landsat is the longest-running space-based Earth observation program in history. The Landsat program officially began in 1972 with the launch of Landsat 1, and with Landsat 4 in 1982, the program began providing mission-to-mission data continuity. This continuity of data is essential for the reliable observation and analysis of earth processes and changes over time.

Available in the ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World, Landsat Level-2 data is a dynamic time series of images accessible through the ArcGIS system and is used to power the Landsat Explorer web application. Through an intuitive user experience, the app takes advantage of ArcGIS capabilities to explore and unlock the wealth of information that Landsat offers. Some of the key features include:

  • Visual exploration and a dynamic global mosaic of the best Landsat views available.

  • Real-time multispectral band combinations and indices for visualization and analysis.

  • Find a Scene Interactive by location, sensor, time and cloud cover.

  • Visual change over time with Swipe and Animation modes.

  • Spectral analysis of vegetation, water, land surface temperature and more.
