After six months of works, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Antioquia inaugurated with great fanfare this Monday, February 12, its renovated auditorium, a place where several of the most important figures in Antioquia and national medicine have passed. in the last 75 years.
The stage received improvements in lighting, acoustics, audiovisual projection, seating, among others. The facility, which will now be renamed Tiberio Álvarez Echeverri, in honor of one of the faculty’s most outstanding teachers in recent decades, has been the scene of representative ceremonies for the academic community such as the delivery of gowns, esculapios and graduations.
“There is no better name to designate this space than that of our illustrious professor Tiberio Álvarez Echeverri. A tribute in life to recognize his outstanding career and his commitment to excellence in the Faculty,” said the rector of the University of Antioquia, John Jairo Arboleda.
“These tributes make one think and reflect on what we have done. The characters, the stories, the moments, the tears, the decision-making, the assemblies, everything that has happened here,” said Professor Tiberio Álvarez, who expressed that the auditorium now bears his name “not so much because of the scientific works.” , but for the dedication to collecting history. I thank my family for their company and patience for allowing me to write regarding this beautiful history of Antioquia medicine.”
According to the dean of the Faculty, Pablo Patiño Grajales, “this scenario reflects the history of many students and professors who became leaders in the city and the country. This is a space for society.” The dean also specified that although the “remodeling of this auditorium can be seen as something only related to the infrastructure, but more than an auditorium, it is a learning environment and construction of academic and sociocultural fabric.”
The remodeling of the emblematic auditorium joins another project carried out by the Faculty of Medicine with important historical, social and heritage significance, such as the Museum of Life, inaugurated last October in the La Naviera building, in the heart of the Center of Medellin.

It took five years for the materialization of a dream that was born in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Antioquia of building a place that would keep the memory of all those names, processes, scientific advances and medical equipment, of all those steps that made it possible to twist his hand to death, gain life expectancy for people.
This is how the Museum of Life opened four months ago in the La Naviera building, the same one that inaugurated the era of modern architecture in Medellín in 1949, leaving behind the Spanish and French influence. That building anchored on the corner of Palacé, where La Playa loses its name and becomes May Day, was erected as a symbol of the ambition of Paisa industrialists to make their way through the country’s ports.
The place, which houses unique pieces fundamental to writing the history of medicine in the country (and whose main donor was Professor Tiberio himself), is open to the public for its fascinating tours upon registration.
