Se o “Apple Car” (or “Project Titan”) has not yet exactly become a reality, the same cannot be said regarding the various departures of people from the vehicle’s supposed development team. At the end of last month, for example, an executive left the team to join an electric car manufacturer, even though the team had recently expanded.

Now, Steve Knower (former Apple executive) entered the Cruisesubsidiary of General Motors dedicated to autonomous vehicles, holding the position of security director, overseeing the company’s management systems and operations. He worked at Maçã between 2015 and 2019, as director of product integrity on the “Apple Car” team and, upon leaving the company, went to Uber.

While at the Cupertino giant, he discussed Apple’s autonomous car program with the California Department of Motor Vehicles in 2018. The executive also proposed to the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2016 an update in its policies to help companies test autonomous vehicles on public roads.

Kenner has worked for several companies in the industry, such as Ford, Aurora and, more recently, by the autonomous truck company Codes, where he designed the company’s security strategy. Cruise itself highlighted the executive’s experience in the area of autonomous vehicle safety and regulation, and the importance of the topic. He started his career at GM as an engineer, it’s worth noting.

“Safety requires all teams in a company to work together to put passengers and other road users first,” he said. “I have worked with critical safety technologies throughout my career, I believe in the safety potential of autonomous vehicles and I want to safely and responsibly achieve this potential,” he added, also highlighting the importance of partnerships with regulators.

It is worth noting, as remembered by TechCrunch, that Kenner’s hiring came following an accident last year with one of Cruise’s “robotaxis,” which struck and dragged a pedestrian. The incident generated controversy inside and outside the company, with investigations being carried out and the suspension of Cruise’s testing license in California, so the executive’s entry into the security area is certainly a response to the case.
