Former US President Donald Trump has nominated his daughter-in-law Lara Trump for the Republican Party leadership. The Republican presidential candidate announced on Monday evening (local time) that she should take over the co-chairmanship of the Republication National Committee (RNC). “Lara is an extremely talented communicator and is committed to everything MAGA (Make America Great Again) stands for,” Trump wrote in the statement. “She told me that she wanted to take on this challenge.” The 41-year-old is married to Trump’s son Eric. She previously appeared as a political commentator on the right-wing US broadcaster Fox News, among others.
Trump suggested his close ally Michael Whatley, the head of the Republicans in the US state of North Carolina, as chairman. Whatley supported Trump in 2020, among other things, by claiming that his victory in the presidential election had been stolen from him through massive fraud. Shortly following the election, Trump tried at various levels to subsequently overturn the election results. To this day, he does not recognize his defeat once morest the Democratic incumbent Joe Biden.
RNC chairwoman wants to resign
At the beginning of the month, US media reported, citing people familiar with the situation, that current RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel planned to resign following the Republican primary in South Carolina on February 24th. If this actually happens, the RNC will have to call a new election. Trump’s proposals are likely to have weight because he is far ahead of his competitor Nikki Haley in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
Among other things, the RNC organizes the nomination party conference, at which the delegates formally elect the Republican presidential candidate following the primary elections. McDaniel has held the RNC chairmanship since 2017. She is also the niece of Senator Mitt Romney, who lost as the Republican candidate in the 2012 presidential election to then-incumbent President Barack Obama.
