Civilians in densely populated Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, are bearing the brunt of the war, following a terrifying series of air strikes launched by the Israeli army on a city now concentrated around 1.5 million people.
The target, said to be Hamas, as part of the operation to release the two Israeli hostages. But as dawn broke over the southern border city, it was clear that the consequences were an absolute tragedy.
According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, at least 100 people were killed overnight, but this number is expected to rise, with many believed to still be buried under the rubble.
For his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued instructions to the Israeli army to prepare for a mass evacuation of civilians from Rafah, which sparked criticism from many in the international community.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also warned on Monday that any ground operation might lead to “more atrocity crimes” by Israel, with there being no safe place for civilians to flee to.
