US Lawmakers Call for Sanctions Against Chinese Biochemical Company Wuxi Pharmaceutical Ming Kangde: Investigation Requested

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers said on Wednesday that Chinese biochemical company Wuxi Pharmaceutical Ming Kangde and its subsidiary YakuMing Biotechnology (2269.HK), opens new tab are subject to U.S. government sanctions. A letter was sent to the relevant ministries and agencies requesting that they conduct an investigation.

The letter was signed by four members of the House Special Committee on China, including the Republican chairman and Democratic members, and was sent to Treasury Secretary Yellen, Defense Secretary Austin, and Commerce Secretary Lemond. Both companies have ties to the Chinese Communist Party and the People’s Liberation Army and pose a threat to U.S. national security.

Congress recently passed a law requiring medical institutions receiving funding from the U.S. federal government to provide genetic information on Americans, including China’s Hua Gui Group (BGI.BB), opens new tab, and Wuxi Pharmaceutical Ming Kangde. A bill has been proposed to restrict it.

The lawmakers who sent the letter cited Chinese government documents and other documents, pointing out that Wuxi Pharmaceutical Ming Kangde clearly has ties to the People’s Liberation Army and supports genocide in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. He also mentioned that the company accepts investments from a number of PLA funds.

The letter states, “Wuxi Pharmaceutical Ming Kangde and Yaku Ming Biotechnology have blurred their ties to the Chinese Communist Party and the People’s Liberation Army, and as a result have rapidly entered the U.S. supply chain by contracting with powerful U.S. biotech companies. ”.
