The Dominican president will insist before the UN on sending a mission to Haiti

Santo Domingo, Feb 12 (EFE).- The Dominican president, Luis Abinader, announced this Monday that on Tuesday, during his participation in a meeting of the UN Security Council, he will speak regarding the deterioration of the crisis in Haiti and will insist on the deployment of the promised mission to help pacify the neighboring country.

During his Monday press conference at the National Palace of Santo Domingo, Abinader explained that he will attend the meeting in response to an invitation from his colleague from Guyana, Mohamed Irfaan Ali, whose country presides over the UN Security Council this month. .

Abinader, who will travel to New York today, will insist tomorrow on the need for the prompt deployment of the multinational mission that Kenya has offered to lead to help Haiti combat armed gangs, but which was put on hold following the Superior Court of Nairobi suspended the sending of a thousand police officers to the Caribbean nation.

The Dominican president said that the situation, “more than a legal issue,” is a matter of financing, since Kenya “is not a rich country” to have all the resources required for the mission.

The head of state warned in several scenarios regarding the repercussions that the situation in Haiti has in the Dominican Republic, immersed in a deep crisis, with armed groups that control Port-au-Prince and other parts of the country and that are responsible for thousands of murders, kidnappings and other crimes.

Last week, the United Nations said that violence grew in January in Haiti to levels not seen in more than two years, a month in which at least 806 people who were not involved in gang clashes were killed, injured or kidnapped.

Additionally, some 300 gang members were injured, bringing the total number of people affected to more than 1,100, more than triple the number in January of last year.

This situation of violence has led to more than 300,000 people becoming displaced in Haiti, following leaving their homes and taking refuge in a range of places where they live in inhumane conditions.
