The analytical agency JD Power has published its traditional (already 35th) rating of car reliability in the American market. It was compiled based on reviews from the first owners of cars under three years old; this year 30,595 people took part in the survey. The study takes into account 184 types of problems in nine categories, and the result is the number of problems per 100 cars – PP100 (problems per 100).

Lexus has traditionally become the leader in the brand standings with a result of 135 problems per 100 cars; second place is taken by Toyota (147 problems), which is recognized as the most reliable manufacturer in the mass segment. Buick (149 problems) lagged behind quite a bit, taking an honorable third place. At the bottom of the list are Audi (275) and Chrysler (310).

In the standings of concerns, Toyota confidently leads with nine leading models in classes: Lexus ES, Lexus IS, Lexus NX, Lexus RX, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Tundra. In second place is General Motors with four class leaders: Buick Encore, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse and Chevrolet Tahoe. Bronze went to BMW – its crossovers BMW X1 and BMW X6 are leaders in their classes. It is curious that the most reliable model in absolute terms does not belong to any of these concerns – it is the Porsche 718.

The average rating this year is 190 problems per 100 machines. This is four units more than a year earlier. JD Power agency experts attribute the increase in the number of problems to confusion in the automotive industry due to quarantine restrictions and shortages of components. At the same time, it turned out that the average age of cars on US roads has reached 12 years, and therefore now it is especially important to create reliable cars that can withstand long-term use.

In addition, the JD Power agency summarized the results of the study and made several interesting conclusions. The main problem area in modern cars is entertainment systems (49 problems per 100 cars): they have almost twice as many faults as the next category, Exterior. Intrusive electronic driving aids continue to irritate drivers even following three years. Moreover, dissatisfaction with their beeps and other warnings only increases over time!

Finally, JD Power calculated the number of problems in vehicles with different types of power plants. It turned out that the most problematic are electric cars (256 problems per 100 cars), followed by rechargeable hybrids (216), conventional hybrids (191) and cars with internal combustion engines without electric add-ons (187). It turns out that the lower the degree of electrification of a car, the more reliable it is?
