EPM provides a definitive solution to intermittent luminaires in some areas of Medellín

Since February 2023, EPM has been responding to all requests associated with the failure that occurred in some of the intermittent street lighting fixtures in Medellín and that were reported by the community in different neighborhoods of the District.

After establishing that two specific references of the luminaires registered a failure, the replacement of all the units that had the novelty began.

Within the replacement process, a total of 29,074 luminaires were changed in 2023.

Since last February 1, a second phase of the intervention plan has been carried out, with the change of approximately 30 thousand more luminaires, thus the novelty will be corrected for 100% of the units identified with potential failure due to intermittency.

This second phase begins in communes 6, 7, 8 and 11, corresponding to Doce de Octubre, Robledo, Villa Hermosa and Laureles-Estadio, respectively.

What caused the intermittency?

The intermittency problem was caused by a failure in one of the electronic components of the luminaire, which was possible to identify following thorough validation and detailed laboratory tests with experts. The lighting equipment supplier has met all warranty requirements and is committed to replacing all of the installed luminaires, without this generating an extra cost for the city or EPM.

The global project to modernize the public lighting system of the District of Medellín is 96.3% complete, with 136,878 LED luminaires installed (including luminaires in the process of being changed).

The technology adopted is of the latest generation, with high efficiency, which provides savings in energy consumption of between 30% and
50% is environmentally friendly; improves the quality of lighting with high uniformity factors, adequate lighting levels, greater color reproduction and better visual comfort for users of roads, parks, sports venues and other city spaces.

All lighting equipment is enabled so that remote management systems and smart city applications can be integrated in the future. The modernization project also meets all the criteria required by the Technical Regulations for Lighting and Public Lighting (RETILAP).
