Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Spanish Formula 1 driver, assured this Monday that he is a candidate “attractive” to replace the British Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes starting in 2025, when he leaves for Ferrari, although he denied having held conversations with the German team.
“I am aware of my situation, which is unique. There are only three world champions on the grid and I am the only available for 2025, so I am in a good position,” said Alonso following the presentation of the AMR24, the new car for the 2024 season.
The world champion in 2005 and 2006 insisted that “there has been nothing” with Mercedes following Hamilton announced that he is leaving for Ferrari at the end of next season. And, although the “first and only” option “at the beginning” and its “priority” to “continue competing beyond this year” will be Aston MartinAlonso does not close the door to being the Briton’s replacement.
“But if we don’t reach an agreement, I know that I am attractive to other teams. I won’t stay in Formula 1 just to have fun. I’m not that type of person or pilot. Let’s see what the options are,” commented the Spaniard.
