Very old computers that do not have hardware to run the Windows 11 won’t even boot the operating system. This is one of the new features that should arrive with the next software update, 24H2, which had its first build released on the Canary and Dev channels recently and promises to be the biggest update yet.
In general, there are people who try to run the operating system on very old PCs, which have chips that are more than 15 years old. Well, this will no longer be possible, as the update will make the OS version require a CPU instruction called POPCNT (population count).
For those who don’t know, this instruction was only implemented in processors from the late 2000s onwards, specifically the first generation Intel Core models and AMD models with Barcelona architecture. That said, a machine that has a Core 2 Duo, for example, will not be able to boot Windows 11.
It is worth remembering that there are some minimum requirements to run the operating system on the PC. However, not everyone fulfills these attributes and installs the software anyway and it ends up running, even if slower in general. If you don’t know what these settings are, see below:
In any case, most modern computers should not be affected by this change. So, users of some CPUs that have been on the market for less than 15 years can rest assured.
