Friends of the Bias Mill and Forge: Annual Meeting Highlights and Upcoming Events for 2023

The association “Friends of the Bias mill, its forge and its museum of old tools” has just held its annual meeting for the 2023 season in the presence of Xavier Llopis, mayor. In her introductory remarks, President Chantal Serrate expressed warm thanks to her ingenious team for “the fabulous work of constructing and installing the large water wheel intended to enhance the mill and attract a greater number of visitors. ” An achievement supported by the chief magistrate who will secure the edge of the site by municipal technical service agents.

The squad, enriched with new faces including ladies, is made up of around thirty elements. In the absence of secretary Roger Mezzone, who recently underwent a minor surgical procedure, his deputy Gilbert Maugard took stock of the visits recorded in 2023 which stand at a total of 186 (compared to 194 in 2022) despite the flow sometimes insufficient water supply. Lasgourgues which prevented the spinning wheel and grindstones from being started, as was the case for the heritage days of September 16 and 17.

Significant investments in equipment

Michel Maltaverne’s financial report revealed a debit balance of €385.96 due mainly to expenses linked to the operating and investment costs of the mill and the forge amounting to €1,620.23. This involves purchases of wheat for the mill, coal, abrasive belts, steel to make a damascus, shelves to store bulk parts and a grinder. The most expensive acquisition concerns a bastanck, a motorized assembly with abrasive belts which allow the polishing and sharpening of knife blades. High-performance equipment! The annual contribution remains fixed at €10.

Main dates of events to remember for 2024: May 18 and 19, European Mill Days; June 22 and 23, Country and mill heritage days; September 21 and 22, European Heritage Days.
