Mexico City, February 11 (EFE).- Hundreds of Mexican activists in favor of Palestine held a demonstration this Sunday in front of the United States Embassy in Mexico City to demand a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and denounce human rights violations by Israel.
The protesters gathered at the Angel of Independence, on the central Reforma Avenue and moved towards the United States diplomatic headquarters, which is a few steps away.
“Stop the genocide once morest Palestine!”, “Free Palestine now!” were part of the slogans of the activists in the Mexican capital, who carried Palestinian flags and mobilized for Reform.
During the demonstration, the so-called Committee for the Liberation of Palestine issued a statement in which it once once more demanded that the Government of Mexico “take firm actions and decisions” to stop the genocide.
The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has repeatedly said that his government “does not take sides either for Israel or Palestine.”
In addition, the president has resisted pressure from left-wing groups in favor of Palestine that ask Mexico for a forceful stance in the conflict, which broke out on October 7 with an attack by the armed wing of the Islamist group Hamas.
This Sunday, Benjamin Netanyahu assured that Israel is determined to carry out a ground offensive on Rafah, in the southern end of Gaza, while international pressure is growing, warning once morest this operation in a place where 1.4 million Palestinians are crowded together, the majority internally displaced.
Warnings regarding the operation are being felt by the UN, which warned of a possible massacre of civilians and violations of international law if it were carried out.
The United States also expressed its concern and this Sunday President Joe Biden spoke regarding it with Netanyahu in a 45-minute call in which he assured him that an operation in Rafah should not be done without a “credible and executable” plan.
Two days ago, the Israeli Prime Minister ordered the Army to propose a possible evacuation plan for the civilians of Rafah, trapped in the southern tip of Gaza with no way out.
In turn, Egypt called this Sunday for “all international and regional efforts” to be united to avoid an offensive. This would affect it a lot, since it has a 14-kilometer-long border with Gaza that adjoins Rafah, called the ‘Philadelphia Line’.
Since the war began more than 4 months ago, the Israeli offensive on Gaza has left more than 28,100 Palestinians dead, including at least 112 who died during the last hours.
