Dakar, Feb 11 (APS) – An exhibition of books dedicated to the Call of Seydina Limamou Laye (1843-1909) is organized on the occasion of the pilgrimage of the layènes, this weekend, in Dakar, to present to visitors the work of this religious guide nicknamed The Mahdi, the messenger of Allah.
”This exhibition is not made to encourage people to become layènes. It is to make them aware of the importance of the work of Seydina Limamou Laye, Mouhamadou Moustapha Laye Seck, a member of the Seydina Issa Rouhou Laye foundation, explained to APS.
The exhibition also evokes the teachings of several Muslim guides from Senegal and other countries, including Cheikh Ibrahima Niass (1900-1975), El Hadji Malick Sy (1855-1922), Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba (1853-1927) and Sheikh Ahmad Tidjani Chérif, the founder of tidjaniya.
It is held in a stand installed near the mausoleum of Seyndina Limamou Laye, which thousands of pilgrims are visiting this weekend, on the occasion of the 144th edition of the Call of the Layènes.
”We exhibit the works of several caliphs of the Mahdi and other scholars from different religious communities,” observes Awa Laye Yade, the general secretary of the association of Layène pupils and students.
The aim of the initiative is to ”make known the works of Seydina Limamou Laye and her caliphs,” she said.
Since 2014, the exhibition has been organized at each edition of the Appel des layènes, according to Awa Laye Yade.
”Come to the call of God, you men and jinn. I am the messenger of God…” is the message addressed in 1881 to his contemporaries by Seydina Limamou Laye, according to his disciples.
It is the invitation made by this Lebou fisherman and farmer from Yoff that the Layènes pilgrimage commemorates. The latter practice Islam according to a Sufi order of which Seydina Limamou Laye is the founder.
