Is drinking yogurt really good for your health?

Drinkable yogurts are very attractive. There are flavors for all tastes and nutritional benefits often advertised or widely suggested by the packaging. But are they really our friends for life? Drinkable yogurt is made like other yogurts. We use milk, we add lactic ferments, that is to say micro-organisms which eat lactose to transform it into lactic acid. To make it liquid, it is then simply beaten.

Nutritionally, there is no difference between yogurt and its liquid equivalent. Whatever its consistency, yogurt is always interesting for its contribution of calcium and protein. But manufacturers have developed drinkable yogurts that are best avoided… And until recently, there was a trap on the packaging: sweetened liquid yogurts might display a Nutri-Score B, suggesting that they were enough nutritionally beneficial. We might therefore believe that it was a healthy drink even though the high sugar content is reminiscent of sugary sodas. From now on, this inconsistency is corrected in the new Nutri-Score: drinking dairy products have moved into categories C, D, even E, at the same level as fruit juices and sodas.

Choosing the right yogurt to drink

In practice, to choose a yogurt to drink, a simple reading of the ingredients is sufficient. Check that “sugars” are not marked in the list of ingredients: apart from lactose, it is preferable that no sugar is added. If you absolutely want to taste the sweet flavor, your choice should depend on your frequency of consumption.

On the other hand, if you plan to consume it daily, choose drinkable yogurts low in sugar. The sugar is then replaced by sweeteners. This is certainly not ideal, but it remains an acceptable choice – provided that you do not also consume foods with sweeteners.

Last point: is there any point in consuming dairy products in small bottles? These contain more probiotics than classic yogurts, and they are enriched with vitamins D and B6. This composition allows the product to display the words “Contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system”. But, be careful, this does not mean that a shot of this dairy product will protect you from infections. I don’t know if it will protect you from anything, but if you like it, it’s a good alternative to yogurt and milk.
