Like a cold shower, the news fell in mid-January. Meyer Burger, one of the former flagships of Swiss industry, which embodies excellence in the field of photovoltaics, is operating at a loss. In a profit warning, the Thun-based group said it expected an operational loss of at least 126 million francs for a turnover of 135 million francs.
The company has indicated that it is preparing to close its Freiberg factory in Germany and wants to relocate the production of its solar panels to the United States. Located around forty kilometers from Dresden in Germany, the site employs around 500 people. A sign of the difficulties encountered, its general director Gunter Erfurt even indicated a few days ago in the German-speaking television program CEO Talk do not rule out a sale of the former manufacturer of silicon saws.
