When we say that sport has health benefits, these are not empty words. Whether for a person in great shape or for another in remission, or in the process of remission from an illness. It is with this in mind that an introduction to a health fencing session was born, at the Sainte-Catherine institute for the management of cancer screening and treatment.
Under the leadership of Bruno Alberro, fencing master at the Orange Fencing Circle, around fifteen people, made up of 95% women, participated in this discovery session of the discipline. “It is a program which was developed twelve years ago in Toulouse for women victims of breast cancer, and as part of post-operative activities. It is done in agreement with the surgeon and the physiotherapist” , describes Bruno Alberro who submitted this idea to the Avignon institute specializing in the fight once morest cancer. “The director gave us a kind ear, and was interested in this approach.”
Clémence Mugica: “Educate them to have an active life”
And the idea works. On the program: a warm-up session to avoid unpleasant surprises, workshops such as foot positioning, movement and a role-play with swords (plastic of course) for a studious group attentive to all the basics of swordplay. fencing.
“One of the objectives is to educate them to have an active lifeindicates Clémence Mugica, adapted physical activity teacher at Sainte-Catherine. We also want to introduce patients to suitable activities, which exist in the region, in which they can participate despite the fact that they have had cancer or are being monitored.”
“For the moment, we are really in the demonstration and not in the initiation and practice. It is really to give them an idea of what they can do. Several activities such as swimming, rowing have developed post-operative activities for breast cancer. Fencing adds an extra dimension”concludes a playfully humorous Bruno Alberro. “My generation is Zorro! You are Jack Sparrow!”
In both cases, it hits the mark.
