In terms of life and death of businesses, two well-known brands in the La Barre sector have disappeared. The La Concha restaurant, long a reference among lovers of gastronomy around fish and seafood, and the McDonald’s fast-food restaurant, which many said had a privileged location, facing the ocean, compared to many its counterparts in shopping centers or on the edge of the ring road.

But this privileged situation, which however prevented the establishment of a drive, was not synonymous with sufficient turnover to allow McDonald’s to continue in La Barre. But like La Concha, the place shouldn’t stay empty for long. In both cases, the walls are the property of the City of Anglet.

Replacement projects

“As for the location of the former McDonald’s, we are going to give ourselves a little time,” confides Anthony Bleuze, deputy mayor for tourism, entertainment and services. The next auctions will be launched from January 1, 2025. Until then, we will purchase the equipment and launch a call for projects for use for one year. It will then be part of the auction round. »

The former La Concha restaurant is in a different situation. The business was recently the subject of an auction, which was successful. A new restaurant project should therefore see the light of day in the coming months, following, it seems, major renovation work. A project which, however, must first be validated by the municipality.

Life must therefore return to this side of the whole which surrounds the La Barre ice rink. A sector of the city, close to Bayonne, which is regularly frequented. All year round or almost with the Hormadi ice hockey school and the Anglet Sports de Glace club with its figure skating and ice dancing sections. The skatepark located there is also very regularly frequented.

A building for Izadia

This sector of Anglet must also experience other changes. A new building will be built to accommodate the offices and exhibition spaces of the Izadia ecological park, which were destroyed during the fire in part of the Pignada forest on Thursday July 30, 2020. This future building will also accommodate the new environmental department, a service which the municipality decided to create.

La Barre will also be an important space for the next contemporary art biennial La Littorale, the ninth edition of which will take place from July 6 to October 19. The art critic and exhibition curator, Didier Arnaudet, will be the artistic director.

La Barre is also a place very frequented by walkers, those who like to run and of course by surfers, even if we are no longer in the era of the mythical waves which made it possible to welcome there in 1968, the first world surfing championships. The construction of the dikes put an end to this particular situation and transformed La Barre beach into a much calmer area, popular with families in the summer.
