Various authorities in the Ñuble Region expressed their regret over the death of former President Sebastián Piñera, which occurred on Tuesday followingnoon following the helicopter he was piloting crashed in Lake Ranco, in the Los Ríos Region. They highlighted the achievements of the former president during his two terms in office, from 2010 to 2014 and from 2018 to 2022.
Presidential delegate Anwar Farrán highlighted the installation process of the Ñuble Region and the reconstruction following the 2010 earthquake. “The death of President Sebastián Piñera is something that we greatly regret and that surprised us all. Here at Ñuble we recognize his contribution to building great agreements for the good of Chile and especially for his work in the installation of the Ñuble region in 2018. Former president Sebastián Piñera was a democrat from the first hour and genuinely sought the good of our country. A good example of that is the reconstruction of Chile following the 2010 earthquake, the rescue of the 33 miners from the San José mine or how not to point out the management of the pandemic in times of global uncertainty,” he said.
For his part, the deputy of Renovación Nacional (RN), Frank Sauerbaum, recalled that the former president was a senator of the Republic, president of RN and highlighted his role as a public servant.
“A person who marked a legacy and who left a mark of public service on the younger generations. We saw in him a person who truly felt public service was a responsibility to the country, who was never unconcerned regarding public issues. Until now, just a few days ago, we were talking regarding what had happened in Valparaíso and how we might collaborate in the reconstruction. Therefore, we are leaving an invaluable person for the country, an intelligent person, an entrepreneur and also an excellent public servant, a friend in many of our cases and also a lover of his family,” he indicated.
The parliamentarian of the Social Christian Party (PSC) Sara Cancha said that “we express our most sincere condolences for the death of former president Sebastián Piñera, who was a presidential leader in two terms. In this moment of national mourning, our words fail to express everything that his departure means in political life and in the hearts of all Chileans. Former President Sebastián Piñera was more than a political leader, he was a man committed to public service, the progress of Chile and democracy in difficult times. His legacy will undoubtedly endure in the collective memory as an example of dedication to the country he served with fervor.”
Meanwhile, PPD deputy Felipe Camaño expressed that “what happened to former president Sebastián Piñera Echenique is a regrettable and painful loss, who on his shoulders had the responsibility of leading the destinies of the country in two periods. This sudden death hits the country by surprise, I just express my deepest condolences, especially to his wife and family in general. As a parliamentarian, I will be present at his state funeral to properly bid farewell to a former president democratically elected and supported by the people of Chile.”
Governor Óscar Crisóstomo highlighted that former President Sebastián Piñera was one of the precursors to recovering democracy in the 1980s. “He undoubtedly made a contribution to our country from a young age, based on his democratic credentials. Remember that he was one of the driving forces in his sector to recover the democracy of the 1980s, later to achieve agreements on important matters. And there is also doubt regarding the contribution that he made to our region of Ñuble, since it was his government’s responsibility to establish our region. Therefore, undoubtedly it is a fact that impacts all of us in our country, he is a president who was ultimately concerned regarding all Chileans.”
The regional councilor Alberto Jarpa referred to the work carried out for the reconstruction of the coastline following the earthquake of 2010. “I had to, in my period as councilor in Biobío, work on the reconstruction with President Piñera, a very important task and I believe very efficient. The coastal edge of the Biobío region was completely destroyed, the commune of Tomé, Dichato specifically, disappeared and President Piñera very quickly called for and was able to implement an important recovery in the reconstruction of the Biobío region at that time, where appropriate measures were taken and in a very short time the harmful effects of the earthquake might be reduced,” he indicated.
