The major fire that broke out on Friday in Poeldijk in the Westland is under control. While extinguishing the fire, firefighters were attacked, pelted and obstructed in their work by bystanders.

The fire broke out in the middle of the evening at a boat company shed and then spread to a building materials store and a few adjacent business premises.

The fire was under control just following 2 a.m., the fire brigade reported on X. Extinguishing it would take a few more hours. Demolition work was also carried out to completely extinguish the fire.

Large flames erupted from the roof of the warehouse, among other things, images showed. An NL Alert was sent because a lot of smoke was released from the fire, which also swept through The Hague. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The police were present on Friday evening to keep people who came to see the fire at a distance. According to the police, the fire brigade was “attacked, pelted and hindered in their work”. That is why the riot police and dog handlers were also deployed.

It is not known why the fire brigade was attacked, a spokesperson for the The Hague police told NU.nl.
