A 15-year-old boy accused of shooting a tourist in a Times Square store, then shooting at a police officer as he fled, was arrested Friday outside New York City, police said.
The teenager was arrested at a Yonkers home that police believe may be linked to a family member, nearly 24 hours following the incident that began Thursday night at a sporting goods store and spread through the bustling streets of midtown Manhattan. .
At a news conference announcing the arrest Friday night, New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban said it was a “truly miracle” that no one was seriously injured in the shooting.
Hours earlier, police identified the suspect as a resident of a Manhattan migrant shelter who arrived in New York from Venezuela late last year.
He is also considered a suspect in an armed robbery in the Bronx and another shooting in Times Square last month, according to police.
Police said the shooter, dressed in white, and two other teenagers were stealing a jacket from the store shortly following 7:00 p.m. when they were confronted by a female security guard who asked to see a receipt.
When they might not present one, the guard withdrew their merchandise. That’s when the teen allegedly pulled out a .45-caliber handgun and shot her.
The bullet missed him, but grazed a 38-year-old tourist who was waiting in line to buy shoes.
The teenager who shot and another who accompanied him fled towards the tourist square in New York.
Four blocks away, on 47th Street — near a triangular pedestrian plaza in Times Square where tourists line up to buy Broadway tickets and take selfies with the area’s iconic signs — two officers quickly spotted the pair and detained them. to the second person.
The shooter fled towards 6th Avenue pursued by one of the officers, and at one point slipped between the buildings. There he turned around and shot the officer, according to police.
Since his arrival in the United States, he has been suspected of several crimes in the city.
The investigations carried out indicate that he is the author of an armed robbery in the Bronx on January 27. Also, he is a suspect in several shootings in Midtown, for which he was described as “armed and dangerous.”
The NYPD was offering a $13,500 reward for information related to the Venezuelan immigrant.
At the time of his arrest he burst into tears.
