Currently, ChatGPT’s generative AI makes it possible to answer questions, produce texts or even lines of code upon simple request in everyday language. OpenAI, the start-up behind the famous conversational robot, wants to go even further. According to The Information, the company led by Sam Altman has been working for a year on the development of AI agents capable of taking control of user devices, such as their smartphones or computers. This new tool, described as “revolutionary”, would thus be able to automate complex tasks on these devices by replacing users.

In the examples cited by the specialized site, one of the agents might for example automatically transfer information from a document to a spreadsheet, or fill out a document in accounting software in place of the user. Currently, these tasks require various human manipulations, clicks and keystrokes, as well as juggling between multiple applications. A second AI agent, meanwhile, would take care of web-based tasks. It might thus be used to book plane tickets, collect data accessible to the public or even plan an event, reports the specialized site.

While such a tool might revolutionize workflow and improve productivity in the professional field, its use also raises questions regarding security, data privacy and ethics.
